Advancing the Health and Prosperity of the Community, the Killam Family Donates Land for Webb County Southern Health Facility

Laredo, Texas (March 29, 2024) – Webb County leaders like Judge Tijerina and Commissioner Gonzalez gathered with pivotal key stakeholders to celebrate a momentous occasion at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Webb County Southern Health Facility. Held on March 25, 2024, community leaders turned over soil to signify a transformative journey toward comprehensive, quality, and accessible health services for El Cenizo, Rio Bravo and surrounding area residents.

This project was made possible by private and public sectors coming together through the Coves of Winfield tax increment financing which enabled this opportunity to help create greater access to healthcare and unlock economic prosperity for all.

Mr. Cliffe Killam, representing the Killam Family and organization, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute and serve in a leadership capacity for the betterment of Webb County residents.  He underscored the importance of investing in healthcare to promote the well-being of the entire community. Killam stated, “Access to healthcare is intrinsically linked to economic prosperity, educational attainment, and social cohesion. By investing in the health of our communities, we are laying the foundation for their growth and prosperity for generations to come.”

The facility will sit on a 4-acre landsite, donated by the Killam Family, and contributed as part of the tax increment financing agreement associated with The Coves at Winfield. This economic development tool is designed to shape, improve, and grow our communities.

Killam shared remarks on the value of collaboration and teamwork across the public and private sectors to move the community forward.  Through economic development tools, the needs of the community can be addressed and all lives uplifted now and for future generations.

With the landsite committed by the Killam Family, Webb County was able to secure the federal grants necessary to secure the project.  Under the leadership of the Killam Family, the organization carefully worked to prepare the land, entitle the site, and ensure there were no barriers in place to get the job done successfully.

The tireless work to bring federal funding to Webb County by Congressman Cuellar was critical as well to ensure this state-of-the-art medical facility would be built.

The Southern Webb County Health facility will be located at 1301 Paseo de los Santos Drive and is projected to span 10,585 sq. ft., equipped with high quality care and medical offices. Other community stakeholders in attendance were Webb County Economic Development Department Director James Flores, along with healthcare professionals Elmo Lopez with Gateway Community Health, Sister Rosemary Welsh, Mercy Ministries, and Ruthe B. Cowl representatives.

As construction commences and progress unfolds, the Killam Family and organization invite stakeholders and community members to stay engaged and participate in the journey towards a brighter, more prosperous future.  By utilizing economic development tools and with an openness to collaborate to make an impact, the public sector can make important things happen with the private sector leaders like Cliffe Killam and the Killam organization to improve the entire community and inspire a better tomorrow.
