Seventy Laredo children, whose families are in the care of Mercy Ministries of Laredo’s Casa de Misericordia Women’s Shelter, will enjoy Christmas gifts this year once again thanks to Killam Oil and Killam Development’s employees.
The employees based in the Laredo headquarters and in its satellite office in San Antonio participate each year, bringing joy to children at the shelter. On Thursday, the company presented over 70 gifts to Mercy Ministries.
Killam Oil and Killam Development employees have organized the gift-giving effort for several years, coordinating annually with a list provided by Casa de Misericordia staff. The list is organized by families and includes the ages of children in the family and their wish list for Christmas.
“We are proud of the people at our organization because we share a value system based on a strong work ethic, leading by example, and giving back generously to the community. Casa de Misericordia is such an important organization because it focuses on empowering women and children. We strongly encourage other civic minded citizens and businesses to consider during this holiday time to give back to Casa de Misericordia,” stated Cliffe Killam, a partner at the firm.
Casa de Misericordia offers battered women the opportunity to reclaim their lives through comprehensive, holistic services and consistent long-term support. The shelter provides secure, temporary residential services to victims of domestic violence.
The shelter’s mission is to change the way domestic violence is perceived, as well as the way battered victims and their families’ needs receive response and attention. The nonprofit organization provides a residential shelter with a 24-hour crisis line, counseling services for adults and children, legal assistance, outreach education, non-residential/outreach services, community referral, assistance with the judicial system and a recreation center for women and children.
